All truck operators are affected, and the regulations are desinged to insure only well-qualified, rested drivers operate properly maintained trucks. Hazardous material regulations insure that proper containers are used to ship these products and that emergency response teams understand how best to respond to an accident. The enforcement of truck safety regulations is increasing, and the states are receiving millions of dollars to enhance their trucking safety programs. It is pointed out that companies should give serious consideration to noncompliance, which can lead to greater potential liability resulting in punitive damage settlements and excessive insurance costs.
