PRIVATIZATION. PRIVATE ROADS FOR PUBLIC GOOD
The private provision of infrastructure is discussed, and it is noted that the public sector does not have the resources to build all the needed projects. It is noted that toll roads remain in better condition than non-toll roads. In Virginia, landmark legislation granted approval for a 15-mile highway in an area plagued by traffic congestion, and where inumerable transportation projects and proposals are competing for public funds. Similar projects in four states are described: California, Colorado, Illinois, and Missouri. In Europe, private toll roads have been common for decades in France, Spain, and Italy. Europe's largest transportation projects have been built and operatied by the private sector, including the Mont Blanc Tunnel and the Channel Tunnel. Similar projects are underway in Australia, Honkong, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
