ASTM TACKLES ASPHALT MODIFIER SPECIFICATIONS

It is noted how the ASTM subcommittee D-4.45 on Modified Asphalt Specifications, is developing and promoting research and formulation of specifications, methods of sampling and testing, recommended practices, and definitions pertaining to materials and materials combinations used in flexible pavements, and bituminous courses and materials incidental to all types of highway pavement construction. Four categories of asphalt modifiers will be considered: polymer-modified asphalts; asphalt-rubber; Trinidad Lake asphalt; and gilsonite. General properties of polymer-modified asphalts of interest to blenders and suppliers have been identified and include the following: compatibility and specificity; determination of completion of blending and homogeneity; pumpability; and storage stability. The needs and interests of users and contractors also are being addressed.
