TELECOMMUNICATIONS LINK: SEATTLE FREEWAY FLOW SYSTEM AND UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON

The results are summarized of a 2-phase project to establish a telecommunications link between Seattle's Traffic Systems Management Center (TSMC) and the University of Washington (UW) Information Retrieval System. Data collected by the TSMC as part of its ramp metering system were transferred to the UW database via telecom link and manipulated for various analyses. A tape library housed at the University Academic Computer Center and a user's guide were also developed. The operation of the link is illustrated and the systems features (establishment of the link, automatic interactive transfer) are described. Example retrieval and analysis run are described, as well as the summary statistic program. An investigation of the impact of incidents was conducted to demonstrate a potential application of the final retrieval and analysis system. Other applications of the Freeway Inforation System are discussed.
