SHAPE OPTIMAL DESIGN OF AN ARCH DAM
A study is reported in which a general 3-dimensional surface design optimization method is developed and demonstrated to be applicable for arch dam design. The CAD-oriented surface design algorithm is implemented, and an accurate continuum-based shape design sensitivity analysis is applied to obtain the gradients of cost and constraints. The data management subroutines of ANSYS (finte element code) are used to interface the sensitivity analysis program with analysis data files. Systematic adjustment of design bounds is developed in the optimization process to achieve design automation.
