IMPACT OF MATERIAL MANAGEMENT ON PRODUCTIVITY - A CASE STUDY
This is a quantification of the potential benefits of applying effective material management practices on commercial construction projects. A comparison is made of two case studies of structural steel erection on two similar, medium-sized, commercial construction projects in central Pennsylvania. The projects were constructed under similar conditions, except that one project had effective informal material management practices, while the other did not. Material-related problems are identified, quantified, and linked to the material management practices. The number of work-hours that were lost because of insufficient practices is noted. The simple steps performed as part of the informal material management program are outlined, and an order-of-magnitude benefit/cost ratio is calculated.
