SKID STEER LOADERS DEMOLISH ELEVATED ROADWAY
Fourteen skid steer loaders equipped with hydraulic rock breakers demolished the three miles of elevated mainline that is Chicago's Ryan Expressway. Special bridge box shields maximized production, worker safety and containment of debris on the deck demolition. Instead of pulverizing the deck, it was broken and removed in slabs to save time and money. Demolition was completed three weeks ahead of schedule, with no lost-time accidents. This article describes the challenges presented by the project, the deck demolition, the removing of the parapets, and the land-based demolition.
