SEEPAGE TOWARDS CERTICAL CUTS. DISCUSSION
This is a discussion of a paper of the above title by A. Muleshkov and S. Banerjee in Volume 113, No. 6 (December 1987) of this journal. The discussers note the importance of the problem of a transient solution for the transient problem. If the soil is highly permeable, the time to achieve steady state may be shorter and steady conditions become more relevant. The question is asked if a vertical slope with such soil proved the long-term stability necessary for a highway embankment. Comments are alo made on the use of sheet pile bracing, and on the comparision surface obtained in the problem to that given by Polubarinova-Kochina (1962). The discussion is followed by a closure by the authors.
