FISSURE PARAMETERS IN STIFF CLAYS UNDER COMPRESSION

The paper describes laboratory studies which investigated the effect that fissure parameters such as orientation, length, number of fissures, and their mode of arrangement have on the unconfined comressive strength of stiff fissured clays. It was found that the inclination of cracks in stiff clays has a marked influence on their unconfined compressive strength, and the length of a crack in a sample affects its unconfined compressive strength. The number of fissures also has an effect on the unconfined compressive strength of fissured clay samples. These and other findings are discussed.
