BEHAVIOR AND DESIGN OF BURIED VERY FLEXIBLE PLASTIC PIPES
This is a discussion of a paper of this title by J.K. Jeyapalan, S.W. Ethiyajeevakaruna, and B.A. Boldon published in Volume 113, No. 6 (November) 1987 issue of this journal. The discussser, Bar-Shlomo, indicates the need to define the term 'very flexible' used in the paper, and comments on the claim that Spangler's equation for buried pipe deflections and Watkins fourmula for wall strains give poor results. Discusser Petroff notes that the paper's conclusion regarding field performance of very flexible plastic pipe dose not agree with field measurements or performance studies made on high density polyethylene pipe. Discusser Bartley agrees with the authors' conclusion regarding Spangler's equation, and disagrees with the authors' conclusion regarding a deflection correction factor based on knowing the properties of the backfill and pipe. The discusser Kienow notes that the development of 'average' correction factors to be applied to conventional deflection and strain calculations is only a partial answer. The discussion is followed by a closure by the authors.
