SURFACE PREPARATION FOR ADHESIVES. CONCRETE PRACTICE NOTE
To ensure successful bonding, concrete surface preparation must be correctly specified and effectively executed. Several types of mechanical systems to properly prepare the surface by removing the contaminated concrete and leave the surface in a roughened condition are described and include the following: shot blast, sand blast, scabbler (bush hammer), scarifier, high pressure water, and grinding. Chemical preparation of the surface is also described. The specification of the correct surface, is also discussed. It is noted that to accomplish the desired objectives, the designer must stipulate the surface requirements; the specifiere must cummunicate the specific surface requirements; and the contractor must execute the work in a manner that will produce the required surface condtion.
