RYAN REHAB REFINED IN SECOND PHASE
The article describes how the second phase of the $210 million Dan Ryan Expressway reconstruction project benefited from lessons learned during the first phase of the work. For example, the entire sequence of piers are being reconstructed by temporarily removing and stockpiling the steel right on the site. Extensive use of timber shoring for dead load deck support, instead of scaffolding, is saving time and creating more working room for pier replacement. Also, the deck is being removed in 6x8 and 6x10-ft sections instead of letting broken deck rubble drop into protective wooden sheeting constructed under the viaduct. This has permitted underbridge work to begin sooner than last year. A massive public relations effort to reroute road users has been continued. In-pavement detectors give a precise measure of viaduct usage, and there is direct data transmission to radio and TV stations.
