STREET SWEEPING: PUBLIC RELATIONS OR NATIONAL HEALTH

This article addresses the question: What are the real, quantifiable benefits of street sweeping? In the United Kingdom there has been little study of the quantitative benefits of street sweeping. Reference to North American studies reveals the areas where studies are needed, such as determination of the quantity of sediments removed, the efficiency of street sweepers, and the pollutant content. Street sweeping has a role to play, every day, in maintaining the health of town and country. In the U.K. there is no visible link between street sweeping and other highway maintenance functions; no link between regular street sweeping and public health and the well-being of the environment; and no link between management procedures, equipment and operation and day to day response to need. It is therefore necessary to quantify the effectiveness of street sweeping operations, to relate the work to other operations in highway drainage maintenance, and so establish relevant "benefits" of efficient street sweeping programmes.
