MARTA SPEEDS ATLANTA'S GROWTH

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) has achieved an even greater than expected success with its transit system. Record breaking ridership, expansion to the Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport, and an extremely successful integration of its bus and rail systems all add to its achievement record. The system, which began as a 6.7-mile, seven station system carrying some 10,000 riders per day, is now a 32-mile system of 29 stations with a daily ridership of some 210,000. Despite all of this, funding continues to plague the system, but citizens of two counties approved a one-percent sales tax to pick up some of the funding slack lost from the federal government.
