ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION EXPERIENCE IN BLENHEIM
In 1986, the blenheim borough council volunteered to undertake a pilot urban accident investigation study in conjunction with the Ministry of Transport and the ministry of works and development. The objective of the study was to reduce the number of injury motor accidents in the borough by the implementation of appropriate low-cost remedial measures. Using five years of injury accident data, traffic volume counts and road hierarchy information, the accident investigation team was able to identify a number of sites, routes and areas as appropriate targets for remedial treatment. This paper outlines the techniques by which these sites were identified and analysed, and how appropriate remedial measures were determined. Particular emphasis is placed on describing the technique of area analysis.(a)
