ROAD ACCIDENTS AND THE ALLOCATION OF RESOURCES TO ROADING IN NEW ZEALAND: AN INTERNATIONAL COMPARISON
This paper compares New Zealand's road safety performance and the allocation of resources to roading with those of some other developed countries. It was found that over the last 20 years New Zealand's performance in road safety has been disappointing in comparison with other developed countries. This has coincided with relatively low resource allocation to roading, particularly new construction. This paper also outlines areas where inputs of resources would be expected to substantially improve road safety in New Zealand.(a)
