COMPACTION OF SOILS. FIELD TESTS ON METHODS OF MEASURING COMPACTION RESULTS AT HOERBY 1985

PACKNING AV JORDMATERIAL. FAELTFOERSOEK MED METODER FOER RESULTATKONTROLL VID HOERBY 1985

This report describes the results of an investigation of compaction of bank fill layers, subbase and roadbase in a road construction project at hoerby in 1985. The investigation is aimed at: -determining the conditions for compaction and measurement of compaction results in road construction regarding variation in grain size distribution, compaction properties and prevailing water ratio of the materials at the time of compaction; -determining the compaction results obtained under these conditions; - testing a number of new methods for measuring compaction results in order to assess their practicability. The investigation is part of a project for producing a basis for new guidelines for soil compaction in the construction directives of the national road administration (bya 84). The project is being carried out by the Swedish road and traffic research institute at the request of the national road administration, but includes collaboration with skanska, byggentreprenoererna, dynapac, geodynamik ab and lund institute of technology. The investigation at hoerby has been financed by the national road administration, the vti, skanska and sbuf. The investigation showed that the conditions for compaction of the bank fill material were poor owing to high water ratios and that this caused poor results. However, satisfactory results were achieved in the subbase and roadbase. The conditions for measuring the degree of compaction proved better than expected due to smaller variations in the bank fill material than predicted on the basis of the composition of the excavated material. A large amount of data has been documented and has been used for determining criteria based on the compaction result achieved at hoerby. The measuring methods tested are also reported. (a)
