OVERLAYING THE M18 WITH CONCRETE

Repairs on a 4.9 km length of the m18 North of thorne in Humberside provided the opportunity to examine continuously reinforced concrete (CRCP) as an economic alternative to flexible reconstruction or a bituminous overlay. The method was chosen to cover an area where differential settlement of up to 350 mm had taken place in the past. Initially, a 40 mm thick hot rolled asphalt regulating layer was provided to ensure a uniform thickness of concrete overlay. Steel reinforcement of 0.65 per cent was placed at mid depth of the 225 mm concrete laid by fixed form paving plant in two 7.43 m wide strips. Wide flange beam joints were used at the start and end of the overlay to anchor the reinforcement. Road studs were mounted in a light aluminium casing to prevent stress concentration in the concrete. Comparisons with other tenders showed that the CRCP costs were 67 per cent of flexible reconstruction and 83 per cent of constructing a 300 mm thick bituminous overlay.
