THE EFFECT OF AERIAL SPEED ENFORCEMENT ON TRAFFIC CRASHES
Police aerial surveillance of traffic speeds commenced in New South Wales in 1986. The effect of the program during 11 months of operation was assessed in this report. It was found that the program reduced the number and severity of crashes around surveillance sites. The reduction in crashes was around 22 per cent. A benefit cost analysis indicated a ratio of about 12:1 for the program. In the absence of evidence of the effectiveness of other enforcement activities aimed at speed reduction, the results of the evaluation support continuation of the aerial surveillance program (a).
