COORDINATION OF BUS AND TAXI SUPPORT: THE BORAS DEMONSTRATION PROJECT ---PUBLIC TRANSPORT PLANNING AND OPERATION, PROCEEDINGS OF SEMINAR K HELD AT THE 12TH PTRC SUMMER ANNUAL MEETING, UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX, ENGLAND, 10-13 JULY 1984, VOLUME P253

The authors describe a full-scale project started in 1981 in the boras region of western Sweden for the integration and coordination of all transport services to keep cost and fares under control. A central feature of the project was the development of the bci centre, a centre for the provision of public transport information. The objective was to create and evaluate a system for the planning and coordination of all types of public transport within the region, including regular and shared taxi services. A computerised bci-centre for bus and taxi service was established in the late 1983, when all private taxis in boras, as well as the special service vehicles of the public transport company, were equiped with in-vehicle micro-computer terminals and linked to a fully computerised dispatch system, capable of handling exclusive as well as shared-ride services. The centre is also responsible for providing information to the public on routes, services and departure times, planning and administrative matters for both the public transport company and the private taxi service, and gathering statistics and processing information for service planning. After a few months of operation, utilisation of all types of vehicles and drivers has increased and empty running has decreased by approximately 35%. Significantly simplified invoicing procedures between transport suppliers and the public sector customers have improved cash flow. For the covering abstract of the seminar see IRRD 284761.
