THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT INFORMATION SYSTEM ---PUBLIC TRANSPORT PLANNING AND OPERATION, PROCEEDINGS OF SEMINAR K HELD AT THE 12TH PTRC SUMMER ANNUAL MEETING, UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX, ENGLAND, 10-13 JULY 1984, VOLUME P253
Since the introduction of the "strippenkaart" fares system in the Netherlands, there has been a lack of information about public patronage of the various transport services. A public transport information system (ptis) was set up to bridge the gap between demand and supply of passenger transport information. This system studies: the responsibilities of public transport operators, demand for information resulting from these responsibilities, available sources of data, flow of information required to link the sources of data with the demand for information, and software to support this flow of information. A practical example of the use of ptis is presented. This is the result of a pilot study of two Dutch public transport operators (one urban bus company, one rural bus company). In this pilot study the most important source of data was the automated passenger counting equipment (including journey time measurement facilities). Details are given of the sampling strategy used, conversion of the raw data into manageable information, the information system itself producing information at different levels of aggregation, accuracy, and cost issues. For the covering abstract of the seminar see IRRD 284761.
