MATRESSES FIRM RIVERBED
Rock-filled mattresses are being laid on a riverbed to prevent erosion of foundations under a pair of bridges in Jacksonville, Florida. Each 18 x 36-ft deep mattress contains 36 gabions (wire mesh baskets filled with rocks). The gabions are covered with mesh and wired together to form the mattresses. Details of the project are briefly described. The mattresses are attached to frames at 130 locations using pieces of wire about 3 1/2 ft long. A quick release mechanism disconnects the mattress when it is bedded in the river. A system was developed for positioning the frames and mattresses below a barge to carry them under a railroad bridge.
