WHAT DOES A DRIVER IN EMERGENCY SITUATION

QUE PEUT FAIRE UN CONDUCTEUR EN SITUATION D'URGENCE

Studies have shown that drivers had the chance to avoid accidents by choosing the right maneuver in 35% of the cases. At intersections, it has been found that sideway avoidance is undereused incomparison with emergency braking. An experimental attempt was made to determine whether drivers were able to asses to what extent these two maneuvers were possible. It was found that the advantages of swerving were as a whole well perceived but that the judgements made showed great variation between the experimental subjects. This suggests that the drivers were not trained to rely on this type of judgement in order to react to an emergency situation. Another experimental study showed that individuals placed in simulated emergency situations preferred and justified a 2-stage strategy: first braking even if it meant undertaking a second action (swerving in front of or behind an obstacle) if their judgement made it seem necessary. Swerving on its own only happens when visibility and space available are crucial, and when braking is not possible.
