EXCLUSIVE DOUBLE-LEFT-TURN-LANES DELAY AND ACCIDENTS
A study is described which compared and contrasted the overall operating efficiency and accident experience at a sample of intersections. The comparison was made between a configuration with a double-left-turn-lane on one or more approaches, and intersections with similar characteristics where there are only conventional single-left-turn-lanes. It was fund that the use of DLTL installation in intersections containing high volumes of left-turning traffic and opposing traffic is favorable. The DLTL helps in moving approximately 19% more vehicles through an intersection within a given time frame than through an intersection which only utilizes SLTLs. This increased capacity is attained while affected accidents increase by an average of less than one accident per million of entering vehicles.
