HIGHWAY PATROL MAKES CALTRANS WORK SAFER
The article describes how the California Highway Patrol takes an active role in highway work zones, and how 'enhanced enforcement' is one aspect of a cooperative effort. Work zone conditons have radically changed in recent times: existing traffic has to be accommodated within right-of-way limits; traffic volume has increased; reduction of incidents and injuries among construction workers needed. California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is using measures to mitigate these impacts through comprehensive traffic management planning in cooperation with California Highway Patrol (CHP). The measures include signing; traffic reduction strategies; traffic control; public information; construction operational plans; and enhanced enforcement.
