ACCURACY OF TURNING FLOW ESTIMATES AT ROAD JUNCTIONS
An estimation method is described which provides a means of calculating turning flows at intersections where in- and out-flows are known, and turning proportions are determined from a knowledge of turning flows by counts carried out in the past. The study described here assesses the accuracy of the estimation method when applied to a number of intersections in Kuwait. Attention is foucsed on the variation of acuracy with the magnitude of the estimated flows. The results of the study showed that there is a tendency for large flows to be underestimated, while smaller flows are overestimated. This method of estimation based on historical data is capable of providing satisfactory estimates of turning flows at many intersections in Kuwait.
