IMAGE PROCESSING APPLIED TO THE DETECTION OF OBSTACLES AT INTERSECTIONS
An obstacle detection system is described, which when used with other sensors should make it possible for automatic surface transport systems to use the general purpose traffic infrastructure (streets). The traffic detection and vehicle control system uses image analysis, with performance levels that approach that of a human driver, as far as the certainty of detection and the reaction time are concerned. Effort is being directed to resolve difficulties related to the nonuiformity of the background and to the background and illumination variations.
