A mathematical model is established which is calibrated by comparing the statistics of the calculated and measured thermal loadings and not by comparing the calculated and measured temperature profiles of any one particular day. Evans' method which was used in the statistical analysis is described. With the frequency distributions of the thermal loadings known, extreme values corresponding to a given return period or a given probability of occurrence can be determined. The paper gives a brief description of the initial and boudary conditions assumed. Fifty-year return values of the thermal loadings for slabs of different thicknesses are given.
