CRASH CUSHIONS: THE BIRMINGHAM EXPERIENCE
The city of Birmingham is conducting a demonstration project involving the use of crash cushions. To date the cushions have been struck on ten separate occasions, needing a total of eight reinstatements. The ten collisions have all been "damage only" accidents, with police in attendance on at least five occasions. Details of the impacts are presented in this article. It is believed that in the first 18 months of use, at least four serious or fatal accidents have been avoided. If this is true, the installations are operating at around a 100% financial rate of return on construction cost.
