MOTORCYCLISTS--IGNORED BY ROAD RESEARCHERS AND DESIGNERS

The "Fatal Accident Reporting System 1984" published by the U.S. Department of Transportation reveals that of the 44,241 fatalities from traffic accidents, 4,430 were motorcyclists, and that there were 157 motorcycle fatal accidents involving guardrails. Despite these facts, and the fact that motorcycle accident litigation is continuing to rise, U.S. researchers and road agencies do not seem to be paying attention to the needs of the motorcyclist. Motorcycle safety must be taken more seriously by all those concerned with research, design, and operation of our streets and highways. Harsh and prejudicial judgments made against selected groups of roadway users must be rejected. West German research concerning motorcycle accidents with guardrails is a ground breaker, showing what can be done when there is an ethical concern for the safety of a particular user group of our roads.
