AN INVESTIGATION OF PREMATURE PAVEMENT DISTRESSES. TECHNICAL NOTE NO. 1
The aim of this study was to investigate the possible causes of premature pavement distresses (shrinkage and transverse cracks and corrugations) on a street in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Deflection measurements indicated that the pavement had been constructed on a sound base and strong subgrade. Construction records were examined, and laboratory and field test results performed during and after construction analysed. The causes of the cracking were found to be related to the brittle nature of the asphalt mix, low mix temperature at the plant, and too finely-graded mix, the presence of dirty aggregates, and poor quality control. The corrugations were caused by poor mix design, heavy tack coat application, and too high an asphalt content. Application of a slurry seal was recommended as an immediate repair strategy for the cracking. Some other recommendations are also presented.
