PIER REPAIRS MADE EASY
Marjon Contracting Company, Ashland, Virginia, recently rehabilitated the substructure for the 4200-ft.-long I-95 bridge over the James River near Richmond for the Virginia Department of Transportation. Work on the $9 million contract started in early 1986 and was completed in the fall of 1988. The 6-lane bridge rests on 93 circular concrete columns, each topped with a hammerhead pier cap. Modular, lightweight scaffolding hung from the bridge girders provided safe access for the repair operations, including the installation of a cathodic protection system. This article provides more detail on the scaffold design, column repairs, and pier cap repairs.
