TURNING BUSINESS AROUND FULL CIRCLE

This article reviews the growth of Chilcote, a company that began in 1963 in El Cajon, California. Through the 1980's, grading and earthwork on residential projects was, and still is, a mainstay in the company's business. Recently, however, Chilcote has been diversifying into underground work and has added more public works projects and beefed up its aggregate crushing capabilities. Chilcote's volume of construction placed has risen steadily from $24 million in fiscal 1985-86 to $75 million in 1987-88. Chief Executive M.L. Chilcote directs expansion efforts, approves all bids and functions as general field superintendent. Among Chilcote's recent projects are a $28 million first-phase contract to rechannel the San Diego River with reclamation of land on both sides, and a $2 million contract to do the earthwork, grading and paving on a major public sector project on Highway 67 in Ramona, California.
