ALABAMA EMPHASIZES APPLICATOR TRAINING
In Alabama, more than 75% of people working with the statewide vegetation management program are certified. The maintenance division of the highway department holds an annual winter training program for about 200 employees from 41 districts. A major focus of the program - about a third of the one-day session - is personal and environmental safety. By training employees, the department has few complaints from the public. In addition to passing a certification test, an applicator must accrue three years of the annual training meetings for recertification. The training program stresses the importance of scouting the landscape before an application crew begins a spray operation. The crews can identify potential problems, such as weeds, environmental concerns, and adjacent crops to be avoided. The program also emphasizes the need to keep careful records.
