ANALYSIS OF LATERALLY LOADED PILES IN SOFT CLAYS
This is a discussion of a paper of this title by M. Budhu and T.G. Davis published in Volume 114, No.1 (January 1988) issue of this journal. The discussers consider the question of whether a particular pile in soft clay will respond elastically or plastically. Points on which the discussers seek clarification are listed. This discussion is followed by a closure by the authors of the original paper. The authors provide clarification on the following points: strength-stiffness ratio; adhesion factor; lateral stress coefficient; and the collapse load.
