SEISMIC RESPONSE OF STRIP FOOTINGS ON ZONED VISCOELASTIC SOILS

A study is reported in which the seismic response of foundations resting on the surface or embedded in an alluvial deposit that rests on a viscoelastic half-space is analyzed. Thus, the effects of the inclusion shape, the foundation embedment, and the bedrock compliance on the foundation motion may be analyzed. To analyze the effect of the soil deposit profile for each seismic excitation, semi- elliptical deposits with axis ratios ranging from unity (semicircle) to infinity (boundless horizontal layer) are considered. For each geometry, values of the ratio between the rigidities of the bedrock and soil deposit ranging from unity (homogenous half-space) to a very large quantity (rigid bedrock) are as sumed in order to analyze the effect of the bedrock compliance. Also, several layers of foundation embedments are assumed. The details of the analysis which was carried out in 3 steps are described. The study findings are discussed.
