ROOF COLLAPSE, TAXI CAB COMPANY GARAGE, CHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS
The observations made on the collapse of the roof of a garage building are presented, and the collapse is described as an example of the severity of the consequences of poor building maintenance. It is noted that when designing renovations of buildings that have long span timber trusses with significant spacings between trusses, the condition of the shear carrying mechanisms must be checked. It is pointed out that if the roof membrane had been maintained and subsequently replaced when the end of its useful life was reached, this failure would have been prevented.
