URBAN PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION GLOSSARY

This glossary is a revision and update of Transportation Research Board Special Report 179, Glossary of Urban Public Transportation Terms, which was published in 1978. Experts in the fields covered by the glossary reviewed the previous glossary and made appropriate revisions, additions, and deletions. The Subcommittee on Urban Public Transportation Terms of the Committee on Public Transportation Planning and Development, through a modified Delphi process, arrived at a consensus for each definition. The definitions are organized alphabetically by term but are extensively cross referenced. Some terms, however, will be found in sets under a primary concept. For example, double-decker, dual-mode, school, etc., will be found under the primary term bus. A few definitions will be found in the definition of a related term. Acronyms and abbreviations are presented at the beginning of each alphabetical section. The glossary consists entirely of selected terms that are related to urban public transportation planning and operations and that are fundamental to the achievement of better communication.
