RECENT INVESTIGATIONS ON SOME ASPECTS OF THE EFFECT OF GROUND WATER ON SLOPE STABILITY ---PROCEEDINGS OF THE FIFTH INTERNATIONAL CONGRWESS, INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ENGINEERING GEOLOGY, 20-25 OCTOBER 1986, BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA. VOLUMES 1, 2 AND 3.
The interaction of ground water and the geological environment through which it percolates, has often been the subject of investigations. However, these investigations mainly refer to physical changes caused by the flow of water, which acts as a hydrostatic, i.e. Hydrodynamic agent in the deterioration of the stability of the terrain. However, more up-to-date research pays greater attention to chemical modifications in rock caused by ground water. It has been found that ground water of certain chemical composition causes changes in the rocks with clay content. This is reflected in the modifications in physical and chemical properties of the rocks and results in a decrease in the stability of slopes and the occurrence of land slides.(a) for the covering abstract of the congress see IRRD 817067.
