TRAFFIC SAFETY OF CYCLISTS IN DENMARK --ROAD USER BEHAVIOR. THEORY AND RESEARCH. PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE 2ND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ROAD SAFETY HELD IN GRONINGEN, NETHERLANDS, AUGUST 1987
There has always been a strong tradition for bicycling in Denmark. However, for a long period there was an insufficient knowledge of bicycle accidents, especially in their relationship to road characteristics and to countermeasures. Over the last few years there has been a change in interest in accident studies from those involving motor vehicles to those involving bicycles. Results are now available about accidents on bicycle tracks along the streets in built-up areas, along the major roads in rural areas, and about edge-lining and bicycle lanes along the major roads in rural areas. Results are presented of a study carried out in 1982 to evaluate the safety of different types of bicycle paths along rural roads, as are results from a study in 1984-1987 to evaluate the safety on streets with bicycle tracks. Local traffic safety campaigns are mentioned briefly. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 815404.
