EVALUATION AND CONTROL OF CONSTRUCTION NOISE: THE STATE-OF ART ---INTERNOISE 84. INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION FOR NOISE CONTROL. PROCEEDINGS 1984 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NOISE CONTROL ENGINEERING, HONOLULU, HAWAII, 3-5 DECEMBER 1984, VOLUMES 1 AND 2.

The noise regulation act, 1968, specifies permissible noise levels for construction works in Japan. For direct measurement and evaluation iso standard 4872 would become the general guidelines but for moving machinery iso 6395 is under preparation. This paper details work at the Japan construction method and machinery research institute to check the validity of the proposed standard. Three technical directions are considered of importance; noise reduction at source, i.e. The use of enclosures and silencers on excavators, tractors, portable compressors etc; changes in construction methods, e.g. Earth drilling instead of drop hammering; and the application of sound barriers at the boundary of construction sites. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 816933.
