ESTIMATION OF TRAFFIC DENSITY ON MOTORWAYS
A scalar Kalman filter is applied to traffic density estimation in a 500-metre section of the Boulevard Peripherique in Paris using presence detector data. After derivation of the model and filter equations, estimates are compared to real traffic density measuremenns extracted from a film. Results indicate accuracy of estimates; excellent tracking capabilities; and low sensitivity with respect to changing application conditions.
