THE TRANS-EUROPEAN NORTH-SOUTH (TEM): FINDING THE WAYS OF PRACTICAL CO-OPERATION

The TEM will link the Baltic, Adriatic, Aegean and Black Seas and the Middle East with a fast, safe and efficient system of motorways stretching some 10000 kilometres in all. Its construction is expected to bring many significant advantages to the economic and social development of the region. The ten participating countries are: Austria, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, Turkey and Yugoslavia. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) is the executive agency of the project in co-operation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The objectives of the project are to aid the countries in designing, constructing, maintaining and operating their respective sections of the TEM which will be an international motorway with uniformly high level of service.
