METHODOLOGY FOR CALCULATION AND FIELD CHECKING ADOPTED FOR A COMPLEX CONFIGURATION FOR AN UNDERGROUND HIGHWAY INTERCHANGE (COMO, ITALY). LARGE ROCK CAVERNS - PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM, HELSINKI, FINLAND, 25-28 AUGUST 1986. VOLUME 2

The survey relates the main problems to be faced in designing the underground interchanges on the Lecco-Colico highway near Abbadia Lariana (Como, Italy). Prior to the excavation for the interchanges, the situation features three middle-section tunnels through the same rock formation (a dolomitic limestone of middle-triassic age). The tunnels are close to each other and in a parietal condition. This context has caused serious difficulties in the positioning of the interchanges. The study and the construction of a wide-span (over 19 metres) underground area have become necessary for the junction of one interchange with the highway towards Lecco. The calculation checks carried out through 2d fem model, in conjunction with geo-structural surveys, have given the necessary guidelines as to the extension and shape of loosened rock areas and of stresses to be relieved by appropriate reinforcement techniques. As construction works progressed, stresses and displacements were being monitored, by borehole extensometers and pressure cells. For the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 810647.
