PROBLEMS IN TUNNELLING CONTRACTS CAUSED BY UNEXPECTED ROCK CONDITIONS. LARGE ROCK CAVERNS - PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM, HELSINKI, FINLAND, 25-28 AUGUST 1986. VOLUME 1

In tunnelling contracts there will always be a large risk element because actual work conditions encountered during the construction period prove to be different from the expected conditions. The problem is basically how to share this risk between the owner and the contractor. The paper deals with the ways of handling the risk during the different stages of a tunnelling contract. The paper reports on the important work being done by the International Tunnelling Association in finding better ways of handling the risks in tunnelling contracts. Finally the paper deals with the Norwegian system for tender and contract documents for tunnelling work. This system is based on long experience and has worked well both with the owners and the contractors. For the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 810647. (Author/TRRL)
