THE FIRST TUNNELS IN RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA, IN POOR GROUND AND PETROL. LARGE ROCK CAVERNS - PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM, HELSINKI, FINLAND, 25-28 AUGUST 1986. VOLUME 1

The first tunnels in Riyadh in soft brecciated limestone needed instant shotcrete and resin bolts tensioned a few minutes after installation. The deformation was kept low as determined by monitoring. Appearance of petrol in the tunnels necessitated special measures to avoid explosion and health problems. Blasting in Saudi Arabia is very controlled and complaints from residents on noise and vibration necessitated measures to reduce those. For the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 810647.
