EROSION CONTROL FABRIC SAVES $90,000

The original plans for River Road, a road leading to the Sullivan Correctional Facility in Woodbourne, New York, included 3,000 lineal ft of roadway embankment on a 2:1 slope involving a total of 30,000 sq yd of seed area. Project consultants immediately saved $90,000 on the project by amending the originally specified 4 in. of topsoil and crown vetch seed to drought-resistant weed seed. This was made possible by the use of a temporary erosion control fabric to protect the seed from rainfall, provide a mulch, and plane off excessive surface water. This article presents further details about the erosion control fabric and its performance.
