KEEPING TRAILERS LEGAL, LOADED AND ROLLING

Trailer selection for hauling equipment is a challenge. On the one hand, contractors must adhere to weight ratings, and on the other hand, haulers would like to maximize loads for a given rating. Trailer materials and design technology have been advancing. Today, shorter span trailers can be made at about 16% of gross vehicle weight rating. That is made possible by better design skills, manufacturing techniques and the use of higher strength materials (heat-treated, alloy steels and in some cases, materials other than steel). This article comments on today's "Super Trailers," discusses ratings questions and the federal definition of gross axle weight rating, and examines today's trends toward longer spans, spread and/or steering axles, and more axles. Safety issues are also addressed.
