THE INFLUENCE OF ROAD WIDTH ON THE LIGHTING OF CURVES

This paper extends previous work in which a curve spacing chart was derived relating maximum luminaire spacing to the radius of curvature for placement on either the inside or outside of the curve. It is shown that a single row of luminaires with spacing derived from that chart can be used to light curves of width up to 1.25 times the luminaire mounting height, the width being extended to 2.5H if supplementary luminaires are used on the opposite side of the road. The exact maximum width depends on the combination of installation parameters used. In general, the use of beam toe-in, overhang and outside mounting is advantageous. The curve spacing chart, supplemented with these conclusions, is a useful design tool for direct application by technicians and provides specialists with provisional input data for computer aided design.
