BLAST CLEANING BRIDGES CALLS FOR PROPER EQUIPMENT

The article describes how air compressor selection and equipment affects sandblasting efficiency. Capacity, operatig pressure range, and air quality are other factors to be considered. Since the air compressor is the most important component of any blast cleaning system, proper sizing and selection of an air compressor greatly influences the efficiency and operating cost of a sandblasting operation. In the selection of air compressor for sandblasting 3 factors should be considered: actual capacity (in cu ft/min) of the unit; operating pressure range of the unit; and quality of air. The production rate and efficiency of the operation are directly proportional to the volume of air supplied by the compressor. Air presure at the nozzle is critical to the efficiency of the system. Efficiency in sandblasting also can be measured by the speed at which the abrasive particles impact the surface. Quality of air determines the oil and moisture contents in the compressed air. Other aspects discussed include the size of air hose, nozzle wear, condition of compressor, condition of air filters and oil filters, engine speed and leaks.
